Tucked away in the northern necks of Virginia on the main drag in Deltaville, you will find a hearth-fired pizzeria like no other. Deltapie Pizza & Specialty Market is your one-stop shop for Neapolitan pizza, craft beer, fine wines, and specialty snacks that will complete your time in Virginia’s Rivah Realm.
Deltaville’s wine Bar & Specialty market
Driving into Deltaville, Virginia, from Hampton Roads is really something. When I first traveled to Deltapie Pizza & Specialty Market to meet Roy and David Bundy to start their social media management with Outer Banks Media,
I was not prepared for the culinary destination that awaited me beyond the corn fields of Middlesex County. I should have known though because these guys were former owners of Zillie’s Island Pantry in Ocracoke, North Carolina, one of my favorite Outer Banks foodie spots of all time.
The pizza shop is located on General Puller Highway, just about the only road in the town of Deltaville. Once you get through all never-ending rows of crops and stumble into town, you almost immediately are greeted by Deltapie Pie Pizza & Specialty Market, a dapper little building with blue shutters!
Immediately upon entering the building you are welcomed by the smell of bread and taken aback by the Italian-style shop full of artisan products ranging from Ice Cream Sandwiches, condiments, beer, wine, and all the fixings for a summer charcuterie board down to the glassware and tablescape decor. If I had this in my small town I would be in heaven.
Eating at deltapie’s Hearth-fired pizza kitchen
Eating at Deltapie though is the real treat for your senses. While everything is thoughtfully curated and visually appealing in the market, that has nothing on the actual products of their kitchen.
While the family-owned pizza restaurant stays true to its Italian roots, there is something familiar and distinctive to the coastal Virginia region about its menu options.
Ya’ll already know I’m a sucker for restaurants with an open kitchen. There is nothing that screams we care about our food more than allowing your customers to watch you make their meal.
At Deltapie, there is a full view of the hearth-fired pizza oven, Locals pop in and out to grab their pies while chatting it up with the owners and their employees.
While you can order ahead online with the Deltapie App and have your food ready for pick up, it’s not a bad experience waiting for your food while you shop for wines, charcuterie, and home goods in the specialty market. The inviting atmosphere of the market offers a great selection of wines, gourmet cheeses, crackers and spreads, and deli-style refrigerators and freezers stocked with ready-to-go treats.
There is plenty of seating inside with great Deltaville-themed signs for sale, but the real vibes are outside. In the summer there are umbrellas at the picnic tables in the fall firepits offer a cozy experience to enjoy with a crisp local Virginia craft beer.
The patio is quaint, but a good spot to unwind with good company. I had to get the boujee bagged wine I found in the beer and wine fridges.
Deltapie food recommendations
The menu at Deltapie encourages you to mix flavors by picking different dishes. I highly recommend you grab an appetizer or two to enjoy on the patio out back like their meatballs, focaccia bread, or some antipasto from out of their market to enjoy out back while you enjoy a glass of wine while your pizza is cooking, but be sure to save room for dessert.
All of the food is made with the freshest ingredients. There is an insane commitment to quality and the lengths the Deltapie crew goes to find ingredients that make a difference in taste is unmatched.
Here are some of my top picks from Deltapie that keep me up at night thinking about how good they were,.
mezze Bowl
You do not want to miss the Mezze Bowl if you like Greek food. The most delicious artichoke hearts, kalamata, dolmades, roasted red peppers, pepperoncini, feta, and hummus come together on warm little pita crackers.
My go-to appetizer that would be perfect to take out on a boat.
salads
Speaking of things I want to eat on a boat, it’s Deltapie’s salads. We tried the Sailor Special Salad and it did not disappoint with its sweet pecans and cranberries. Served in convenient bowls with lids, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to do the Kardashian bowl shake to add to their homemade Basil Balsamic Dressing.
You also can’t go wrong with a little Caprese too.
hearth fired neapolitan pizzas
All of DeltaPie’s pizzas are made 12-inch Neapolitan-style. The hearth-fired oven cooks each thin-crust pizza at 700 degrees.
I highly recommend you try the build-your-own pizza option where you can select to have either a red or white sauce base, different cheeses, and veggie toppings, You also have the option to choose from their gluten-free cauliflower crust and vegan cheese options.
If that is too overwhelming, you can pick from their pizza menu full of traditional and specialty pizzas with regional-related names including the Stingray Point Lover Boy, Chesapeake Pesto, and Rappahanock Special featuring a Deltaville staple, crab meat!
My personal favorite pizza is Allie’s Hot Honey Pie featuring a drizzle of AR’s Hot Honey. The honey pairs so perfectly with the creamy white, garlic sauce, prosciutto, mozzarella, and ricotta cheese. This one you have to try!
Specialty pizza, calzone, and Heat & Eat Meals
If their expansive menu isn’t reason enough to stop in, Deltapie’s specialty pizza and calzone keep options fresh, along with their Heat & Eat meals. Occasionally they will offer lunch specials, like their Philly Cheesesteak Sub with Cheese-Whiz, which is to die for.
Heat & Eat Meals, like their Rosemarie Grilled & Chilled Pork Tenderloin or retro Rose Marie Shrimp Salad with Orzo, will generously feed two people and include two desserts. Generally, the meal is less than $45 – a hard-to-beat price for a meal this delicious.
Chef Mike’s desserts
If you have saved room, you have to try Chef Mike’s desserts. Chef Mike is a nationally awarded pastry chef living in Deltaville, Virginia. He has an astonishing resume and the taste of his work backs it up.
From pecan pie to dainty cannolis, cream puffs, or Cheesecake, everything is so decadent and expertly made.
The housemade Pecan Pie is occasionally available in their frozen, an extra popular addition for takeout orders during the holiday season.
