A Local’s Guide to Elizabeth City, North Carolina

Welcome to Elizabeth City, North Carolina, also known as the Harbor of Hospitality!

As a local, I am proud to say that Elizabeth City has become vibrant over the past few years. Downtown is full of restaurants, small businesses, plenty of town folks, and visitors passing through that are making Elizabeth City great.

In this guide, I will share with you some of my favorite recommendations for spending time in Elizabeth City, making it the swampy hometown charm, I’ve grown to love.

History of Elizabeth City, North Carolina

Elizabeth City is a town full of history and community. Situated along the Intracoastal Waterway on North Carolina’s Pasquotank River just north of the Albemarle Sound west of the Outer Banks and south of Virginia Beach, connected by George Washington’s Great Dismal Swamp Canal.

Since the city is only about an hour away from the Atlantic Ocean and offers 48 hours of free boat docking it makes the perfect spot to hide out for a day or two while sailing or burning rubber down US HWY 17. Travelers year after year find themselves in this “Inner Banks” town where the highway on the outskirts of town spans for miles into a fertile desert of land that yields bounds of potato crops year over year.

Our nation’s founding fathers envisioned Elizabeth City this way. A region rich with township and where I do my grocery shopping. In fact, I remember when you could not even buy groceries at Walmart here!

Best Things to Do in Downtown Elizabeth City, North Carolina

As you can imagine I know the ins and outs of a town as quaint and rural as this, but this city is on the cusp of something great, surprising me often with random happenings, new people, and a thriving upcoming business economy, especially downtown.

Elizabeth City’s close proximity to the waterfront makes downtown the ideal place to find something to do. Not to mention three higher education facilities, including Elizabeth City State University, an HBCU, Mid-Atlantic Christian University, a private Christian college, and College of the Albemarle, a community college, nearby help keep things happening.

If I were to recommend things to do in Elizabeth City with a boater just stopping by or a friend in town, here are some of my favorite activities primarily in downtown but a few out in the outskirts of Pasquotank County too.

Museum of the Albemarle

Location: 501 South Water Street, Elizabeth City, North Carolina 27909

If you are new to the Elizabeth City area, your first stop should be the Museum of the Albemarle so you can delve into the unexpectedly rich history of the region right underneath your feet. From Native American culture to maritime heritage on the Albemarle Sound, even the indelible mark left by the Civil War, every era of history is here.

what truly sets the Museum of the Albemarle apart is its commitment to preserving the untold stories that are often overshadowed. by the more well-known aspects of history. One story I love featured here is of the marooned slaves from the Great Dismal Swamp who courageously escaped the bonds of slavery and formed their own communities within the dense confines of the swamp is a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who sought freedom against all odds.

Another honorable exhibit is the story of Alvin Sawyer, a local moonshiner (and family friend, apparently) who navigated the complex world of illegal alcohol production and evaded police multiple times in the Great Dismal Swamp.

One thing about Elizabeth City, is our people are resourceful and resilient. I love that this place is a bridge connecting that with visitors.

Walk the Pasquotank River at Downtown Waterfront Park

Location: 508 S Water Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909

The Museum of the Albemarle overlooks the Pasquotank River and Downtown Waterfront Park. In the heart of town, this place offers scenic review views, plenty of parking, multiple boat ramps, and the ideal spot to start a serene stroll downtown.

The Riverwalk boardwalk offers unobstructed views of the Pasquotank River. Sometimes you can even catch the rowing teams and sailboats go by!

Marinar’s Warf

Location: 202 South Water Street Elizabeth City, NC 27909

Along the river, you will find Marinar’s Warf. There are 14 boat slips here along the bulkhead with restaurants, showers, wifi,

In days past the warf was the site of civil war activity, The once busy warf now has a placement for the North Carolina Black Heritage Tour commemorating Wild’s Raid, where a brigade freed 2,500 enslaved people in Elizabeth City and the surrounding area in a 3-week long excursion.

Today the area is used for Farmer’s Markets and Elizabeth City’s Music on the Green concert series.

Wright Brothers Aviation Trial

Elizabeth City is closely linked to the history of aviation, as it played a role in the Wright Brothers’ famous journey to Kitty Hawk. While you’re in town, you can delve into this fascinating history by walking Elizabeth City’s Aviation Trial.

The meandering trail takes you to many notable buildings and hotels patronized by the brothers. There are 9 markers in town serving as an opportunity to explore the enduring legacy of flight pioneered by the Wright Brothers.

Stroll Pallin’s Alley

Location: 606b E Colonial Ave, Elizabeth City, NC 27909

From Waterfront Park to downtown you will find plenty of restaurants, stores, and historic real estate. Some buildings used to look abandoned, but it’s obvious once you happen upon Pallin’s Alley that many local artists have been hard at work.

Pallin’s Alley is adorned with murals and lights, appearing to be new age and hip, but locals have always known about this hidden gem. Strolling along the alley connected to bustling Water Street and Main Street you are reminded that this place has been a hub of commerce and community for generations in Elizabeth City. Today, it serves more as a social gathering place with many local restaurants and libations nearby within walking distance.

Visit a gallery or take a painting class

Elizabeth City has a thriving arts scene, and you’ll find several art galleries and shops that showcase the talents of local and regional artists.

Located in the heart of downtown Elizabeth City, Arts of the Albemarle is a prominent cultural hub. The gallery features a diverse collection of artwork, including paintings, sculptures, and crafts. It’s an excellent place to admire and purchase local art.

The Center at Arts of the Albemarle is an extension of Arts of the Albemarle showcasing the work of local and emerging artists. The center often hosts rotating exhibitions, so there’s always something new to see including theatrical productions!

Another fan favorite and the new art spot in town is Lilypad Pottery. I haven’t visited yet, but will update you when we do! This ceramic shop offers paint classes downtown.

Elizabeth City Breakfast Restaurants

Okay, I have to admit. The breakfast restaurant selection in Elizabeth City has a lot to be desired.

But the folks who do breakfast around here do it right.

Colonial Cafe

Location: 418 E Colonial Ave, Elizabeth City, NC 27909

Colonial Cafe is my favorite breakfast restaurant in Elizabeth City. You know they do breakfast well because they are only open until 2 PM and they have a counter you can order from with stools.

My only complaint is they are especially popular and load up quickly for breakfast. Never had anything bad here though.

Circle II Restaurant

Location: 205 S Hughes Blvd, Elizabeth City, NC 27909

Circle II Restaurant is another option for breakfast in Elizabeth City. If you like country link sausages and are able to leave downtown this is a great place to try.

Elizabeth City Dinner Restaurants

Elizabeth City is a great foodie destination. Whether you want a romantic date night, a meal with family, or dinner with friends, these restaurants are locally owned, and patroned by the locals.

Hoppin’ Johnz

Location: 606 E. Colonial Ave., Elizabeth City, NC

Hoppin’ Johnz offers a savory farm-to-table dining experience featuring regional ingredients whenever possible.

The drink menu is fantastic. The bread is divine. Their Hoppin’ John is definitely hopping.

I had the opportunity to test their creation for the Elizabeth City Mac & Cheese Cook-Off and their Cheez-It Mac & Cheese with Divine. Do not miss any opportunity to try their specialty dishes for lunch or dinner.

Paradiso Roma Ristorante

Location: 35 Camden CSWY Elizabeth City, NC 27909

Technically located across the bridge from Elizabeth City in Camden County, Paradiso Roma Ristorante is another top favorite for dinner. They offer a convenient online ordering platform so takeout is always an option here, which is dangerous because their pizza is amazing and easy for Taylor to pick up after work.

I don’t like to do this too often though because the restaurant is beautiful, offering waterfront dining with views available both inside and out almost all around. There is also space for large parties here.

If you don’t get the pizza, opt for the garlic knots instead. Trust me, you will be wanting to go back for more.

Allecious Family Restaurant

Location: 106 N. McMorrine St., Elizabeth City, NC 27909

Two words. Soul food. That is what you will find at Allecious Restaurant where faith and family meet. There is nothing like a restaurant where the owner and chef intermingle with their guests.

If you want a place where you feel at home, where the collard greens are cooked in fat meat, and the sweet tea is kicking, this is your place. They are also open for lunch!

Pro tip: Ask for the Pound Cake.

Sagos on the River

Location: 400 South Water St. Elizabeth City, NC 27909

I’m planning a wedding so trying Sagos on the River has not been in my budget lately,. Plus it is November when I am writing this and I think I missed the ship set sail to enjoy fantastic weather on their newly renovated, pet-friendly outdoor decks overlooking the Pasquotank River.

The interior looks beautiful, so I cannot wait to try it once it’s spring!

The Mills Downtown Bistro

Location: 200 N. Poindexter Street Elizabeth City, NC 27909

I have not tried the Mills Downtown Bistro, but have heard fantastic things about this contemporary restaurant. With a varied menu that includes steaks, seafood, and vegetarian options it seems to have something for everyone and is close to Pallin’s Alley.

Cypress Creek Grill

Location: 113 S Water St Elizabeth City, NC 27909

Cypress Creek Grill is closed closer to the Museum of the Albemarle and River Walk. This restaurant is known for its fresh seafood and relaxing atmosphere. I ate here once, but have not been back in years. It is on my list of places to catch soon.

Quality Seafood Restaurant and Market

Location: 309 E Ehringhaus St, Elizabeth City, NC 27909

Quality Seafood Restaurant is a bit more of a casual recommendation than my previous picks, but real ones know about this place. If you like fried fish, oysters, and crabcakes paired with homestyle fixings like hushpuppies and coleslaw, you will love this place.

On the other side of the restaurant, in the market, you can pick up fresh seafood, breading, and oil to have your own fish fry at home.

Montero’s Restaurant

Location: 414 North McArthur Street Elizabeth City

I have not eaten at Montero’s Restaurant in ages, but the facilities are gorgeous. Located inside a historic sprawling white two-story farmhouse, this sprawling dining oasis was always my top pick for birthday dinner when I was in elementary school.

Dining here is intimate. If you call to make a reservation they ask if you have an occasion and will dress up your table to celebrate.

Big Daddy’s Pizza

Location: 103 Capital Trce, Elizabeth City, NC, 27909

These restaurant options for carry-out become even more enticing with the up-and-coming brewery and bar scene in town, allowing you to pair your favorite brews with delectable dishes from local establishments.

Here are some of my top choices for take-out food in Elizabeth City.

Big Boss Burritos

Location: 110 N Poindexter St, Elizabeth City, NC 27909

Big Boss Burritos honestly has my favorite branding in all of Elizabeth City. I first discovered Junior, the owner of the taco and burrito joint, during COVID. I would sneak out of the house to bring my family Big Boss Burritos all the time and it was all because I found him on social media.

While Big Boss does have a bar that absolutely, smacks, I like to grab this to go because they are very fast and convenient, offering online ordering and a food truck too!
